About the Item
A gorgeous Victorian - Belle Epoque Diamond and Pearl Pendant Brooch from the estate of Wendy Vanderbilt Lehman.
The pendant is a masterpiece of jewelry making. It is set with stunning Old Mine Cut Diamonds totaling approximately 1/2 Carats with the quality you would expect from the Vanderbilts. The pendant is adorned with stunning silvery white pearls all in a luscious 14 Karat Gold which is so warm and inviting.
Wendy Vanderbilt Lehman.
Wendy was born in California to Manuela Hudson and Alfred Gwynne Vanderbilt II, a pioneer in thoroughbred racing, whose father had gone down on the Lusitania. She grew up between Palm Beach and Manhattan and was featured in one of Lilly Pulitzer’s first advertising campaigns. Although she enjoyed the social circuit, Wendy chose to devote her time to her loving children and her remarkable art. Her artistic expression spanned several mediums, including extraordinary sculptures in wood and aluminum, evocative paintings in acrylic and watercolor, and her bold eclectic fashion. After attending Sarah Lawrence College, Wendy married Orin Lehman, New York State’s longest-serving commissioner of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation and a great-grandson of Mayer Lehman, a founder of the Lehman Brothers investment firm.
This is a magnificent Belle Epoque jeweled pendant, worthy of the premier American family of the Gilded Age. What a treasure. The romantic open work flower motif design is the work of a master artisan. The workmanship is stunning. It is gorgeous 14 Karat gold.
The pendant is fully convertible to a brooch. The diamond bale is removable and the attached bale is on a hinge which folds down so is not visible when the jewel is worn as a brooch. The jewel is set with antique Old Mine Cut Diamonds.

The pearls are stunning silvery white pearls of great beauty. These are incredibly matched and all appear to be original to the piece.
The pendant brooch is a Museum Quality work worthy of the fine jewelry collections in the Boston Museum of Fine Arts or the Victoria and Albert Museum in London! It dates to c1880-1910 and is a masterwork of jewelry design.
