About the Item
This silver pendant features an authentic Roman silver coin called a Victoriatus, dating back to the 3rd century BC. It showcases Jupiter's head adorned with a laurel wreath on one side and emperor Antoninus Pius on the rear.
Jupiter, originally revered as an aerial deity, was identified by his thunderbolt and his sacred creature, the eagle. This powerful symbol, often depicted as an eagle holding a thunderbolt, was commonly found on Greek and Roman coins, representing Jupiter's might and authority.
As the god of the sky, Jupiter held a significant role as a witness to oaths, embodying the fundamental trust crucial for justice and effective governance. His divine duties were largely concentrated around the Capitoline Hill, the location of the citadel. Within the Capitoline Triad, he stood as the primary guardian of the state alongside Juno and Minerva. Throughout Roman mythology, the oak tree was revered as a symbol sacred to Jupiter, signifying his connection to nature and power.
