This exceptional vintage pendant showcases the artistry of Hetian white jade, masterfully carved over 40 years ago to depict a brown bat alongside a ridged gourd, creating a harmonious composition rich with auspicious symbolism. The piece displays luminous pale celadon coloration with beautiful russet inclusions creating a striking natural contrast.
Hetian jade, sourced from the Kunlun Mountains of Xinjiang, China, has been treasured for over 4,000 years as the most prized jade variety in Chinese culture. This vintage piece exhibits the characteristic "mutton-fat" quality prized in premium Hetian jade, with a soft glow that seems to emanate from within, distinctive creamy translucence, and beautiful radish-silk pattern - delicate natural veining visible under close inspection that enhances the jade's character and value.
The carving depicts a bat rendered in fine relief, while a gourd is carved into the white portion of the stone. In Chinese culture, the bat symbolizes good fortune and happiness, as the word for bat (蝠, fú) sounds like blessing or fortune (福, fú). The ridged gourd (絲瓜, also known as angled luffa or Chinese okra) represents abundance and fertility, as gourds produce many seeds and symbolize the continuation of blessings through generations. Together, these motifs create a powerful talisman for lasting prosperity and good fortune.
The beautiful russet areas are known as "pi" (皮), or skin—the natural outer layer of the original raw jade stone. These areas are deliberately preserved and artfully incorporated into the carving, with the bat expertly carved on the russet skin to make artistic use of the natural coloration.
