About the Item
This rare and delicate bag was handcrafted in the early 19th century. The silk is covered with a net that is used for embroidering. The handbag is decorated on one side with hand embroidered flowers in red, yellow, light and dark green. The flowers are embellished by tiny gilt metal beads and framed by lozenges made out of polished gilt metal beads. These lozenges alternate with lozenges made up from small flowers. Each flower is made out of black glass beads, one polished steel bead and three gilt metal beads. Inside these flower lozenges there are smaller lozenges made out of facetted steel beads and white glass beads. The other side shows leaves made up from glass beads in two different hues of blue, black and gold. The outline of the leaves are accentuated by polished gilt metal beads. Red and black stitches are used to create swirls in between the leaves. The silk cords and trimmings are in remarkable good condition. There are some beads missing but all the motifs are clearly recognisable.
