About the Item
This exceptional and rare antique French silver and niello vesta case dating to circa 1880 is made by A. Dubois.
The front of the vesta case is decorated with a pair of birds sitting on the branch surrounded by foliage and flowers, and the back with a single bird amongst flowering branches reminds us of the Aesthetic movement of a 19th-century Japonisme style in France. The hinged cover opens to reveal a silver interior with French hallmarks and a maker's mark (A. Dubois).
Silver and Niello's work creates a beautiful contrast in colour. A fantastic quality and craftsmanship.
PERIOD: Late 19th century
MEASUREMENTS: 22.67 weight, approx 55mm x 35mm
CONDITION: Small ding on the back below the bird, lid closes, but slightly loose. Otherwise a good antique condition. Wear, loss to the gilt inside.
