Antique French Opaline Palais Royal Jewelry Casket, Goat Pulls Carriage w Eglomise of Tuileries, Patch Box The scene is a tiny painting of the Jardin de Tuilieries, stretching from just to the Louvre side of the Concord on down to the Arch de Triomphe in the distance. Beyond there is the famed Champs Elysee, of course, so this is one of the most wonderful (and rare) eglomise views we've seen. The term 'eglomise' means back-painted glass, and these little miniature paintings are often painted directly on glass, or perhaps some on wafer protected by a cover glass This one is painted on the back of the glass. These early souvenirs of Paris were found in the early to mid-1800s boutiques of the famed Palais Royal of Paris, which is the old palace of Cardinal Richelieu, which we've written much about. The boutiques lined the promdnade of the central gardens, and the area was host to Royals, dignitaries, the posh societies of times past. The treasures from the Palais Royal remain today some of the most sought after antiques to be found, and this charming little goat carriage is one among those, wonderful in all ways. Photos tell the story of this item, and the measurements. Very good to excellent for age and type, with the single flaw being a very old repair to a hairline crack in the alabaster plinth. It's solid as a rock now (no pun intended), and the line is faint, not taking away from enjoyment or beauty in display - yet we do want to bring it to your attention. The box is a patch box, often sold on their own for around $500, so this is an extra special piece, I'm sure you'll agree. Collectors, line up!
