Fine, luxurious heavy antique Imperial Russian 14K yellow gold and cabochon sapphire cigarette case.
19th Century
Exquisite workmanship, sophisticated design of undulating gold waves with an elegant oval cabochon blue sapphire thumb piece. Artistically rendered to catch the play of light on the waves creating the effect of movement. The wave motif is quite complex, requiring a master goldsmith- it has been a favorite of Cartier and Faberge at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th centuries. This cigarette case was expertly calibrated by the maker to remain open at different angles.
A fabulous gift for a sailing enthusiast.

Sergei Verhovtsev was a renown 19th century second generation Master silver and goldsmith. He is recorded as having received an important commission for Tsar Alexander II for the altar in Pochaev Lavra (1859-1861) and the riza for the 16th century miracle performing icon in 1866. The bill the Tsar received for the riza totalled an astronomical for the time 3646 rubles and 90 kopecs which included the cost of gold, jewels and labor.
The Verhovtsev Workshop was founded in 1819 by Fedor Andreeivich Verhovtsev, Sergei's father. Sergei took over the studio in 1867 and is mentioned in Postnikova-Loseva as having 42 workers in 1881, a very large number for the time and pointing to a prestigious, successful business. Numerous works by the father and son are in the permanent collections of museums including the State Historical Museum, Moscow.
