About the Item
An antique agate, and yellow gold propelling pencil, comprising one round panel of white agate, in 14 karat and 10 karat yellow gold.
My favourite thing about this Antique Yellow Gold Agate Pencil is the elegant engine turned design. What’s yours? Perhaps the agate terminal? Or its functionality?
The pencil is set to the terminal with a circular panel of white agate, held within a simple, elegant hexagonal terminal. The shaft of the pencil is engraved with an engine turned design and the finger grip (which allows the mechanism of the pencil to be expanded and retracted) is engraved similarly. The tip of the pencil unscrews, allowing the graphite to be replaced, and the ridged section of the tip can be turned, propelling the graphite up and down within the pencil. The terminal of the pencil can be unscrewed, allowing for storage of additional graphite. A small arrow is engraved to the pencil, near to the terminal, and the pencil is stamped ‘M’ to the nib. The pencil is in good condition. There appears to be a small area of old solder near to the terminal, which may be an old repair.

Hallmarks: none, tests as approximately 10 karat yellow gold and 14 karat yellow gold in different places (majority of barrel tests as approximately 14 karat gold, terminal and nib test as approximately 10 karat gold), circa 1915. Internal mechanism is not gold.
