Antique Mechanical Music Box Harp in Sterling Silver, circa 1860
An exceptionally rare and enchanting antique mechanical music box, crafted in the form of a harp and dating to circa 1860, most likely of British origin. Preserved in its original, unrestored condition, this remarkable object showcases an extraordinary level of 19th-century silversmithing and mechanical craftsmanship.
The harp is richly decorated with fine engraving and chasing, while the base is accented with three pearl seed settings. The harp body itself is adorned with three garnets, adding subtle color and refinement to the silver surface. Crowning the composition is a finely modeled figurine of a Greek goddess, lending classical elegance and symbolic grace to the piece.
The mechanical movement is discreetly housed within the base and is in excellent working order. Once wound, the mechanism is activated by gently lifting one of the floral elements, at which point the harp plays with a delicate, crisp, and charming sound. A sound clip is available.
Stamped 925 Sterling Silver, this music box represents a rare survival of decorative mechanical art from the mid-19th century—objects of this quality and originality are increasingly difficult to find.
A truly special piece for a discerning antique or objet d’art collection, equally valued for its artistry, history, and mechanical ingenuity.
