About the Item
This is a fine example of a layered cameo, a technique popular in the first half of the 19th century.
A pensive young woman, carved out of white sardonyx, is resting her head on her arm that leans on a column. The carved agate is fixed onto an oval basalt plaque which is mounted in a thin red gold frame. The outer frame made out of yellow gold is designed as a series of rocaille and acorn motifs.
