About the Item
Unmounted soap stone cameo in high relief of a sitting caritas (charity) surrounded by four children in a garden. She is bare breasted, wears a richly pleated gown and a necklace. She is nurturing one of the children, two others cling to her gown. One child is standing on an elevation and clinging on to her shoulders with his two arms. Her carefully plaited hair is covered by fabric and ornamented by a ferroniere.
Very fine work, probably Italian, beginning of the 19th century.
