Art Deco Pierrette Figurine Sculpture by Josef Lorenzl Jade ashtray, circa 1925.
Refined Art Deco figurative sculpture depicting a female figure in theatrical costume, inspired by the Commedia dell’Arte tradition and the Pierrot / Pierrette character. Executed in cold-painted metal and mounted on a polished jade base, the sculpture displays the elongated proportions, elegant restraint, and stylized modeling characteristic of Viennese Art Deco.
The figure is shown standing with hands at her hips, dressed in a tailored, stage-like costume that blends theatrical reference with modern design. The expressive yet understated pose reflects the Art Deco fascination with performance, costume, and reinterpretations of classical theatrical archetypes.
The sculpture is signed “Lor.” incised on the leg, an accepted signature of Josef Lorenzl (Austrian, 1892–1950), one of the leading sculptors of the Viennese Art Deco movement.
The original polychrome surface is preserved with light, age-appropriate wear. The jade base exhibits natural veining consistent with period examples. It actually was an ashtray, servicing a purpose, not just an elegant item.
A sophisticated and collectible example of Austrian Art Deco sculpture, combining theatrical symbolism with modernist elegance.
