About the Item

This exquisite snuff bottle represents the art of late Imperial China. It is carved from a monolithic piece of natural ruby, a testament to exceptional luxury and the significant challenge of working with this hard and brittle material. Design Symbolism: On opposing sides of the vessel, executed in relief, are the canonical symbols of supreme power. One side features the powerful five-clawed Dragon (Long), embodying the Emperor, the masculine principle (Yang), strength, and celestial protection. The other side displays the Phoenix (Fenghuang), symbol of the Empress, the feminine principle (Yin), virtue, and renewal. Their paired depiction signifies harmonious union, prosperity, and the Mandate of Heaven. The mythical creatures are rendered in dynamic poses amidst stylized clouds, showcasing the carver's artistry. Purpose Context: Snuff bottles of this caliber were not mere utilitarian objects. They were created as: • Status Symbols for high-ranking mandarins, wealthy merchants, or the imperial family itself, showcasing wealth, refined taste, and social standing. • Prestigious Gifts to solidify alliances or express the deepest respect. • Objects for Contemplation Collecting, valued for material beauty, virtuoso craftsmanship, and layered symbolism. Their practical use for holding snuff was secondary; it was a ritual that underscored the owner's sophistication. Technical Details: Material: Natural solid ruby (corundum). Period: Late Qing Dynasty (late 19th – early 20th century). Dimensions: Height: 63.5 mm, Width: 43 mm. Weight: 82.20 grams. Features: Carved from a single stone; high-relief carving of Dragon and Phoenix; original stopper. This bottle is not merely a container but an expression of Chinese culture, mythology, and jewel-like artistry at the twilight of the imperial era.
