About the Item

This marvelous and whimsical gilded bronze “Stations du Métro” belt was designed and made by Line Vautrin in France in 1945. True to Vautrin’s signature style, the belt is imbued with whimsy, imagination, and a playful spirit. It features articulated plaques, each bearing the name of various Parisian subway stations. Measuring 26 ½ inches in length by 1 1/8 inches in width, this unique piece comes with a letter of authenticity from the Comité Line Vautrin. In excellent condition, this belt is a delightful and beautiful addition to any fashion or jewelry lover’s collection. Born in 1913 into a family of metal founders, Line Vautrin was a pioneer in the field of innovative jewelry design. By age 14, she had mastered casting, chasing, and gilding, and at 15, she began creating artistic costume jewelry in gilt metal. Initially working as a door-to-door saleswoman in Paris, along with a brief spell working for the studio of Elsa Schiaparelli, Vautrin’s breakthrough came at the 1937 Paris International Exposition, leading her to open a small shop in Rue de Berri. Her creations, made primarily in the 1940s and 1950s from resins, glass, and bronze, are celebrated for their inventiveness and experimental nature. Vautrin's work was influenced by ancient motifs, primitive art, and avant-garde designs. She opened a boutique and workshop in the Marais, fostering a model social enterprise. In the 1960s, she patented a new technique using synthetic resin and mirror-glass, leading to the creation of her famed “witches” mirrors. After retiring from business, she dedicated herself to teaching and continued to explore new artistic techniques until her passing in 1997.

Collectible Line Vautrin Gilt Bronze Brooch, c. 1945
By Line Vautrin
Located in New York, NY
A collectible gilt-bronze brooch showing a sunlit lion was designed by pioneering French woman jeweler Line Vautrin, France, circa 1945. It is a small but mighty piece weighing 27.72 grams and signed “LV.” Vautrin’s brooch makes the perfect gift for a partner or a unique addition to an artist’s jewelry aficionado’s collection. Born into a family of metal founders, even as a small child Line Vautrin (1913-1997) was fascinated by her father’s business. She never received a formal art education, but by the time she was 14, she had mastered the skills of casting, chasing, and gilding bronze. At 15, she hit upon the novel concept of making artistic jewelry in gilt metal. She began to sell pieces almost immediately; Vautrin devoted herself to experimentation with new materials then and, indeed, throughout her career but remained committed to bronze. In a time when few women played such a role, she was a pioneering craftswoman known for highly original jewelry enveloped in wordplay and symbology. The turning point came when she hired a stand at the Paris International Exposition...
