About the Item
This small copper portrait depicts a female figure around 10-12 years old, shown in half torso and looking to the left. The young girl wears a black silk gown with lechuguillas ruffs, typical of fashion from 1598 to 1629, when such collars were in vogue. She is adorned with abundant jewelry, most notably a jewel on her chest with a pendant illustrating a Marian scene, symbolizing her Catholic faith, and a coral ship on her sleeve, a protective amulet for children. Her face is also adorned with earrings and several gold threads in her hair, highlighting her noble status.
Although unsigned, the iconographic elements and the similarity of her features with later portraits suggest that the depicted subject is a young Isabel de Borbón, shortly before becoming Princess of Asturias alongside the then-Prince Felipe. While the authorship is unconfirmed, comparison with contemporary portraits, such as that of Prince Felipe at the Lázaro Galdiano Museum (Madrid), and the fact that Bartolomé González served as a court painter, attribute this work to the artist from Valladolid. Both portraits would have been part of a set of wedding portrait exchanges. Bartolomé González was a Spanish court painter, known primarily for his portraits of royalty and nobility during the reigns of Philip III and Philip IV. The portrait is preserved in its original oval-shaped wooden case with a central volume, painted burgundy on the outside, and lined and protected inside with beige silk fabrics to safeguard the painting.
