About the Item

This sterling silver keychain proudly holds an authentic Roman bronze coin from the 1st century AD, featuring the likeness of Emperor Domitian. Adorning the reverse side of the coin is the image of the Goddess Fortuna, the divine personification of fortune and luck in Roman mythology. Fortuna was often depicted holding a cornucopia and a rudder, symbolizing abundance and the power to steer fate. Domitian, born on October 24, AD 51, ascended to the Roman imperial throne in AD 81, succeeding his father Vespasian and his brother Titus, thus becoming the final ruler of the Flavian dynasty. His reign, spanning from AD 81 to 96, was marked by increasingly authoritarian policies that brought him into sharp conflict with the Senate, leading to a significant reduction of its influence. Initially confined to a minor and largely ceremonial role during the reigns of his father and brother, Domitian rose to power following the proclamation of the Praetorian Guard after Titus’s death. His 15-year reign was the longest of any emperor since Tiberius. As emperor, Domitian introduced important economic reforms, including the revaluation of Roman coinage, strengthened the empire’s border defenses, and launched an ambitious rebuilding program to restore and embellish the city of Rome. Military campaigns were conducted in Britain, where his general Agricola advanced into Caledonia (modern Scotland), and in Dacia, although a decisive victory over King Decebalus ultimately proved elusive. Domitian’s rule was characterized by strong authoritarian control and extensive religious, military, and cultural propaganda, fostering a pronounced cult of personality. By appointing himself perpetual censor, he sought to regulate both public and private morality. While he enjoyed popularity among the army and the general population, his autocratic governance led many senators to denounce him as a tyrant.
