Russian Silver Stein 1854. 0.875 Silver Every now and then you come across something that is truly extraordinary. This is one of those of times. This silver stein was crafted in in 1854 to celebrate the Russian and more specifically Cossack cavalry victory over the Persians (Turks) of the Ottoman Empire during the Russo-Turkish war 1826 to 1828. The fighting occurred in the far eastern region of Turkey near the eastern end of the Black Sea and within sight of Mt Ararat. This stein is likely a one off and records of its original presentation and owners are lost to history, or at least to google. It moved westwards over the years ending up in Paris in the 1920s. Lucien Goldman who was a Parisian dealer in antiquities purchased it in the 1920s or 30s and kept it until the outbreak of the Second World War. He fled Paris in front of the Nazi occupation but not before hiding several valued possessions from the Germans. During the war, the family escaped Paris walking to the Spanish frontier, through Spain and then to Portugal and finally emigrated to Canada. When peace in Europe finally arrived, the valuables including the stein were collected and repatriated to their family. It has stayed in the same family until now. The stein itself depicts Cossacks and Turks engaged in battle in relief and the lid is adorned with a Cossack astride a collapsing horse. Interestingly, there is a tiny engraving of the Ark hovering over the summit of Ararat. Looking very closely you can see a Lion’s face smiling off the stern and what looks like a pair of birds looking out over the bow and the Ark sits on a pool of water. The inside of the stein has a gold plating as does the inside of the lid. The bottom bears the silver marks 84, AK over 1854 a figure with a dog and the name Lederuhr. The last is possibly the name of the silver smith. Experts who have examined this artifact have attributed it to perhaps a German silver smith working in Russia. It was a common practice as the Czar imported many craftsman from all over Europe to create the treasures of Russia Cheers, David Charles Grainger
