A Very Fine Micro-mosaic Brooch Depicting a Classic King Charles Spaniel c1830, attributed to Luigi Cavaliere Moglia, Roman School (c1813-1878). He was one of the most esteemed mosaic artists of all time. In 1851 he won a gold medal at the 'Great Exhibition' of London for his micro-mosaic work. Among his best known works are Spaniel after Aguatti and Flight to Egypt. Moglia's works can be seen in the Royal Collection Trust, Cincinnati Museum of Art and the Hermitage, St. Petersburg. Panels depicting dogs were popular subjects for micro mosaicists in the 19th century due to the romantic connections associated with these animals, they were seen to be symbolic of faithful love.
