About the Item
This exquisite hair comb was created in the second quarter of the 19th century. The ornamental part of the comb is designed as a series of entwined circles amidst scrollwork to the left and right. The entire top of the comb is decorated with engraving. The reverse of the comb is impressed with the head of the minerva second title on the two outer teeth, second title meaning small guarantee ie 800 silver. The lower silver content helps the comb to keep its perfect shape, the higher the silver content the softer the material. The outer left tooth on the reverse carries a makers mark in a lozenge.
There are so called bigornes as countermarks, in our case a locust or grasshopper. According to Tardy those bigornes were in use from 1819 until May 9th 1838. The minerva heads were in use as from 10th of May 1838. This should narrow down the date the comb was made to 1838.
