About the Item
This hair ornament was handcrafted in the 1sthalf of the 19thcentury, most likely around 1830. It is made out of gilt silver and set in open claw settings withtwisted gold wiire decoration with bright pinkish red paste stones.
On one side the ornament features an openwork pomegranate made out of filigree wire attached to the wide pin. The other side pf the hair ornament shows an open work pointed leaf ornament, decorated with scroll and leaf ornaments. To secure the pin in the hair it is pulled out of pomegranate, theaded through the hair and than slit back into the pomegranate. The round tip of the pin that fastenes into the pomegranate is marked with an impressed hallmark. The pointed leaf ornament features two small oak leaves, in the folkloristic imagery of the Austria and Southern Germany the oak leve is a powerful protetion agains thunder and lightning.
