About the Item
This beautifully carved full face of a Bacchante or possibly of Bacchus. The carving is so crisp and well defined and could pass as a Roman antique.
The head is wreathed with well executed grape leaves of gold. The detail on the leaves is of the highest quality. This is really the best carved coral
portrait pendent I’ve ever handled.
You can see from the photographs the back of the piece is a plate of solid gold with an interesting, pierced design. Notice the quite large and solid pair of hooks to secure the necklace. This piece is most likely from the Neapolitan area.
I think it dates from the latter half of the 19th century. Possibly earlier, as coral jewelry has always been highly prized. This piece is very nice and definitely not a crudely made tourist piece.
An intricately wrought chain would be a nice with this pendant.
