About the Item
This antique stickpin was handcrafted in Florence in 1870 ca. In the iconographical language of old master paintings
the fly symbolises the devil. The devil against the devil, that makes a potent amulet against the evil. Flies were a frequent motive in Italian jewellery since antiquity.
In this unusual stickpin different hard stones, among the small turquoise, have been cut into small shapes to make up the body of the fly. The mosaic is inserted in a cream coloured agate. The fly's legs and feelers have been engraved into the white agate and then blackened.
The mount of the mosaic was made out of silver in the archaeological revival taste of the 1860's and 1870's. The silver is partially gilt with rose gold.
