About the Item
An 18 karat yellow gold diamond set snake ring, circa 1913
This charming ring, is excellently modelled and features a pair of stylized snakes coiled around the finger of the wearer.
Each of the snakes is bezel set with a pair of transitional cut diamond eyes for a total weight of 0.20 carats approximately, assessed as H/I colour, VS2-SI1 clarity.
Stamped '18' for 18 karat gold, together with Assay marks for Chester dated 1913
Width 13mm
The ring is a UK size X 1/2, USA size 12 this can be resized for a perfect fit.
Whilst the use of the snake motif in jewellery has been around since the Ancient Greek civilisation, it really came into its own during the Victorian era.
It was Queen Victoria herself who bought snake jewellery to the forefront when she was presented with a snake engagement ring set with her birthstone an emerald by her husband-to-be, Prince Albert.
The Victorians associated the snake motif with eternal love.
Condition - Overall the condition of the ring is very good, with some abrasions to the surface of the gold in keeping with its general age
