A fine and impressive antique synthetic ruby and 0.12 carat diamond, 18 karat yellow gold dress ring; part of our diverse antique jewelry and estate jewelry collections.
This fine and impressive diamond and ruby cocktail ring has been crafted in 18k yellow gold.
The three graduating round mixed cut synthetic rubies* are displayed alternately between two pairs of Dutch cut diamonds within the subtle elliptical setting.
The elevated ring shoulders blend seamlessly with the plain hallmarked ring shank.
The ring is hallmarked to the interior with the maker's mark 'GH', the gold guarantee mark (crown), the the 18k gold mark (18), the Chester city-arms and the date letter for 1913 (N).
This impressive antique dress ring is supplied with an IDGL diamond grading report card.
NOTE * In 1837 Gaudin made the first synthetic rubies by fusing potash alum at a high temperature with a little chromium as a pigment. Natural rubies and synthetic rubies look very similar on general observation. Synthetic rubies have a different internal color banding and crystal structure which can only be identified under specific test conditions.
*NOTE: Contrary to what many people may think, the word 'synthetic' does not mean fake when it comes to gemstones. In order for a material to be called 'synthetic' it must have a natural counterpart. A synthetic ruby will have the same chemical composition as a natural ruby and therefore have an almost identical appearance to the naked eye.
The first ruby formed by melting two smaller rubies together was in 1817, and the first microscopic crystals created from alumina in a laboratory in 1837.
Common practice was to set and enhance fine quality antique jewelry with vibrant and colorful synthetic stones.
Images do not always reflect the true color and brilliance of gemstones and diamonds. The video however provides a truer representation of the actual color and showcases each stone.
Condition
This impressive antique gemstone ring is set with synthetic rubies and very well color matched, very high color graded old cut diamonds.
The ring is a very good gauge of gold and is in excellent condition with a clear set of English hallmarks to the interior of the shank.
Reflections in photographs may detract from the true representation of this fine example of antique jewelry/estate jewelry.
