About the Item
An antique sardonyx, and gold ring, comprising one panel of carved sardonyx, set in 15 karat yellow gold, to a 15 karat gold band concealing hairwork.
This unique ring is ever so beautiful. To the centre, is an oval panel of sardonyx, carved to resemble a forget-me-not flower, using the black and white layers of the stone to pick out the detail. This elegant cameo is set within yellow gold and is in wonderful condition. The ring is elegantly engraved, in wonderful detail, all around the domed band. There are panels that run around the ring, which have been cut out of the band, and to the right of the band, there is a small catch that can be pulled to the left, sliding the engraved panels around and revealing open panels of plaited hairwork within. I have never seen a ring quite like this. The hairwork is mainly in great condition, apart from one panel, where it has begun to unravel.
To come across a ring such as this, is a very rare find. The ring itself is in excellent condition, and the sliding mechanism runs perfectly. Wear and tear acquiescent with age.
The head of the ring measures 8.5mm high and 7mm wide. The band measures just under 5mm wide at the back.
