About the Item

Georgian almandine garnet eternity band in 15K gold. Almandine garnets were used widely during this early 1780's period because it was believed that garnets were the most complimentary to every woman's skin tone (which at the time was as pale as possible). Each of the 14 almandine garnets that comprise this ring is hand carved and polished smooth by the lapidaries of the day, and then fitted to a gold mount, also hand carved by a Georgian goldsmith. The garnets are backed in gold and set with 18th century foils which were needed to reflect light. Eternity bands can be worn alone or stacked with other rings. This Georgian ring is a perfect example of a Georgian era ring using a Georgian era stone and Georgian goldsmithing techniques. The gold backing is a work of art in and of itself and the garnets are polished and smooth. The ring is a size 7.5 and measures 1/4" wide. There are approximately 2 and ½ carats of garnets.

C1880 18K Five Stone Almandine Garnet Ring
Located in Baltimore, MD
The five stone 19th century ring design is one of the most enduring Victorian ring styles today. The Victorians designed five stone rings using every gemstone and combinations of gemstones imaginable. Our ring has 5 polished flat cut almandine garnets set into a gold border and open in the back allowing in light and air. The gold work between the stones allows the ring to be worn alongside other rings without damaging the stones. We love the scroll detail on the shoulders. The half hoop ring design and original hand drawn renderings is shown in the last image and was duplicated from the 1896 catalog of EW Streeter, with further credit to Diana Scarisbrick's book Rings: Symbols of Wealth, Power, and Affection. The ring is a US size 6 and is approximately 4 cm high. It is shown in the images alongside an almandine garnet single stone locket...

C1680 Stuart Period Paste Cluster Ring with Center Almandine Garnet
Located in Baltimore, MD
Unusual English Stuart period paste cluster ring with 8 rose cut pastes set in silver and backed in 18K with a gold bordered almandine garnet stone at center. Rings with paste stones in combination with real stones are unusual. The rose cut pastes on this ring are meticulously hand carved and the ring has significant hand gold work throughout. There is a painted black Florentine enamel design at the shoulders and the band is 18K. The goldsmith etched 3 flourishes into the gold band where the enamel painting ends on each side. The back of the ring is carved into a 6 leaved gold flower and raised about 3-4 mmm to give it depth. The ring back is as spectacular as the front. Such artistry could only be accomplished through the hand-work of an early goldsmith. The origin of paste is credited to 2 infamous Georges, the first being George Ravenscroft, an English glassmaker who in the 16th century invented a composition of leaded glass that resembled rock crystal. This composition of glass and lead and other mysterious ingredients were further developed and popularized by a Parisian jeweler, George Straus who is widely credited with popularizing paste jewelry...
