Donald Claflin was an American jewelry designer known for his bold, whimsical, and innovative creations that pushed the boundaries of traditional fine jewelry. Born in the 1930s, Claflin began his career as a designer for David Webb before joining Tiffany
Co. in 1965, where he remained until 1977. At Tiffany, he introduced a fresh, playful approach to high jewelry, often incorporating colorful gemstones, intricate enamel work, and imaginative motifs such as mythical creatures, animals, and folklore-inspired designs. His most famous contribution was Tiffany’s introduction of tanzanite in 1968, when he created striking pieces that helped establish the rare blue gemstone in the world of fine jewelry.
After leaving Tiffany, Claflin went on to design for Bulgari, bringing his creative vision to the Italian jewelry house. Throughout his career, his work stood out for its originality, artistry, and ability to blend fine craftsmanship with a sense of whimsy. Though he passed away in the 1970s, Claflin’s designs remain highly collectible, celebrated for their charm, vibrant use of color, and inventive forms that continue to captivate collectors and jewelry enthusiasts worldwide.
