From Ancient times religious rings such as this Georgian Decade or Rosary Ring have been worn for prayer. This gold ring with a cross on the face is a rare Georgian example. it is made in 18k yellow gold with ten small knobs interspersed evenly along the ring's outer edge. Each knob is raised from the 18Kt gold shank. Every stop or station represents a procession of prayers to be recited as you move your finger from one to the next. Why was this worn instead of praying with a rosary.? That is the history or prayer permitted or not in historyl Rosary rings were developed back at a time when the practice of Catholicism was considered a crime. One could not carry a rosary but could have a ring for the same purpose, with no one else the wiser. It is interesting to note that the wearer would feel the knobs which would remind him or her to be observant and pray frequently. The silver knobs sit up quite high'; and are a reminder of your devotion and commitment to faith.
The book, "British Rings", by Charles Oman shows three similar rings for historical context. Size 7 1/2 Cannot be sized.
