During the 1930s and 1940s, transitional cut diamonds emerged as a bridge between the old mine and European cuts. Unlike their predecessors, which were designed to dazzle in candlelight, transitional cuts focused on symmetry and uniformity. This emphasis paved the way for the precision and brilliance found in today's modern round brilliant cuts.
The original round diamond cut, known as the old European, was popular in the late 1800s. These diamonds featured small tables, steep crowns, and fat pavilion faceting, resulting in a chunkier appearance with large cutlets. However, as cutters began to experiment with light performance in the 1920s, the transition to the transitional cut began.
Transitional cut diamonds, also referred to as early modern early American cuts, exhibit distinct characteristics. They have a larger table, lower crown, and smaller culet compared to old European cuts, effectively bridging the gap between vintage diamonds and the flashy cuts we see today. With approximately 58 facets, transitional cut diamonds offer a unique arrangement of larger and smaller facets, creating a captivating pattern of light reflection.
