About the Item

Post Medieval gold posy ring 'BE x TRV x TIL x DEATHE x AND x SO // SHAL x I' ('be true till death and so shall I'). A D-shape band decorated on the exterior with five rectangular panels containing curvilinear scrollwork and one smaller square panel with linear scrollwork, the interior of the band is engraved in Roman capital script 'BE x TRV x TIL x DEATHE x AND x SO // SHAL x I', translated from old English as 'be true till death and so shall I', approximately 6.3mm in width. Tested yellow gold, approximately 5.23 grams in weight, circa 16th-17th century. Accompanied by documentation from the Portable Antiquities Scheme stating this ring was found by a metal detector on 8th January 2023 in a garden in Burton Agnes, East Yorkshire, UK. This ring is recorded by the Portable Antiquities Scheme under reference YORYM-7CD0D7 and disclaimed as Treasure under the Treasure Act, reference 2023T41. Lettering and inscriptions can be used to narrow the dating of a ring with Oman (1974: 41) noting that inscriptions in Roman capitals were commonly inscribed on posy rings from the mid-16th century. Roman capital script was replaced by italic inscriptions in the second quarter of the 17th century. The decoration and construction of this posy ring can be compared to two other posy rings under the Portable Antiquities Scheme references GLO-55A844 and IOW-5EFAB8.
