About the Item
A vintage diamond platinum snake ring, circa 1970
This charming snake ring, coils twice around the finger of the wearer.
Crafted as a realistically modelled snake and grain set with round brilliant cut diamond eyes of 0.04 carat approximately, assessed as G/H colour, VS1-SI1 clarity. Finished with textured engraving throughout its body to mimic the scales of a snake.
Stamped PL900 to the inside of the ring.
Width: 13mm at the widest point
The ring is a finger size UK N 1/2, USA size 6 3/4. Due to the nature of the design this cannot be resized.
Whilst the use of the snake motif in jewellery has been around since the Ancient Greek civilisation, it really came into its own during the Victorian era.
It was Queen Victoria herself who bought snake jewellery to the forefront when she was presented with a snake engagement ring set with her birthstone an emerald by her husband-to-be, Prince Albert.
The Victorians associated the snake motif with eternal love.
Condition - Overall the condition of the ring is very good, with some abrasions and slight discolouration to the surface of the platinum to the reverse of the ring, in keeping with its general age. This can be seen in the photos.
