The combination of sapphire and diamond has long been one to hold romantic connotations: especially in 19th century gemlore, the sapphire has represented fidelity, whilst the diamond, due to its great hardness, has been associated with eternity. Prince Albert gave Queen Victoria a brooch made of a sapphire encircled by diamonds as a wedding gift, and many subsequent gifts of love have employed this very combination of precious stones. The ring at hand dates to the last years of the Belle Époque, the "beautiful era". A large octagonal sapphire of 2.05 ct rests within a bed of gleaming old European and rose cut diamonds. The sapphire showcases the sky-blue colour associated with sapphires found in the mines of Ceylon (Sri Lanka), which then was still part of the British Empire; gemstones from the famous mines on the far-away island were shipped to Britain and distributed in Europe. The colour and clarity are of natural origin, and the gemstone shows no signs of heating or any other treatment. The setting takes into account the colours of the gemstones: typical of the era, a fine layer of platinum covers the front of the ring, heightening the effects of both the sapphire and diamonds. Only the shank is made of yellow gold, yet when the ring is worn, only white platinum is visible. Due to its flat design, the ring is comfortable to wear and therefore also suited as an engagement ring. It will be delivered with the independent certificate of a gemological institute.
