Gorgeous old Italian octagonal Micromosaic scene of Two Doves nesting together in the folds of a red cloak. The Mosaica is embedded into slick shaped solid 18K Rose Gold frame.True Art lover's jewelry form,this ring is unisex and will look great on the fingers of Men and Women if the size is correct :) Dating to ca. late 18 - early 19 century this piece is one the rare examples of this beautiful Art form of so called Roman design with multitude of tiny pieces of semiprecious stones or colored glass,called tesserae, pieced together to form a picture.All micro parts are held in place with special cement on Glass or Stone background plate , invisible in our case for the back side is closed . The final product was then waxed and polished, and the finished jewelry piece was much smoother and finer in appearance than the regular mosaic. Such designs gained widespread popularity in Europe in the first half of 18th century. I'm not sure if the tesserae on this ring is made of Stone or Glass,they are too numerous and colorful and much less than 1 mm pieces which were painstakingly hand assembled and placed into a pattern exactly as was described above. From casual distance of 50 cm it appears to be almost a fluid picture with no spaces visible to the naked eye. From very close distance the background tiles seem to be of dark Blue color under sunlight but look completely Black under artificial light. The size and delicacy of the work is truly remarkable.The mosaic measures 20 mm x 13 mm x 2.14 mm /including gold wall /deep. Size Ø US 9.75 / 19.62 mm. Sizing is possible but hot type resizing is not recommended ,it's best to size using special laser equipment .Weight : 5.3 gr Very Fine used condition. Mosaic is intact and complete with no missing pieces. The cement used to make micro mosaic jewelry usually makes the piece impervious to moisture, but care must be used, since the cement can be softened with water in some cases, which will result in some of the tiles coming loose. For this reason, the piece should never be soaked in water. Be sure not to allow the water to stay in contact for too long and don't allow it to affect the old cement or putty used to hold the tiles.
