About the Item
A highly unique antique ruby, blue sapphire and old cut diamond triple cluster ring set in 18k gold and silver.
The ring is centrally set with a stunning oval shaped ruby which is claw set in an open back setting. The ruby is then flanked to each side by two well matched oval shaped blue sapphires. All three stones are individually surrounded by fine old cut diamonds.
The stones are encased in silver on gold, a technique used regularly by the Victorians. Reasons for the use of silver in jewellery in this era was all down to aesthetics and the desired effect of the jewellery. Platinum and white gold was an unknown entity at this point in time so silver was used on top of gold to brighten the diamonds. Over time it has blackened, creating a gorgeous antique patina, which is hard to replicate in todays world.
For size reference the head of the ring measures 1.5 x 2.0 centimetres in size and sits 0.5 centimetres off the finger. The ring is currently a UK finger size O but can be resized for a perfect fit. The central ruby is estimated to weigh 0.75 carats, there is a combined blue sapphire weight of 1.20 carats. There is an estimated combined diamond weight of 1.55 carats, ranging I-J in colour with SI clarity. Due to the age of the ring, it is not hallmarked however has been assessed and gold and silver, typical of the mid Victorian era.
