About the Item

The ruby is the red variety of the mineral corundum, to which the sapphire belongs, too. With its fiery appearance, the ruby is one of the most precious and sought-after gemstones in the world. Truly excellent rubies can only be found in a few places; among them, the mines of the city Mogok in Myanmar (Burma) have become especially famous. The best rubies found in those mines are characterised by a deep red with a fine blueish tinge, also called pigeon blood. An intense, deep red ruby in the coveted pigeon blood shade is presented in this ring, where it is framed by a halo of diamonds. On a slightly raised gallery, the ring face shows off the 1.2 ct ruby and 2.0 ct Top Wesselton brilliants in a shape reminiscent of a flower. The gemstones are set in white gold, allowing them to truly shine. This precious jewel is a classic entourage ring. The word is derived from the French word for company and describes the way the diamonds surround the middle stone. Having been known since the Baroque period, the entourage ring saw a huge rise in popularity in the 1960s and 1970s, where it was commonly executed in white gold, with a coloured gemstone as its focal point. Many classic engagement rings follow this type, for instance Princess Diana's sapphire engagement ring, now worn by Kate Middleton. Our ring was also made in the last third of the 20th century, around 1970. While such entourage rings were popular throughout Europe and the United States, we know that this one was made in Germany, due to its hallmarks. It combines a wealth of precious and rare materials with quality of craftsmanship and a timeless design.
