1960s emerald diamond ballerina ring, Distinctive 18karat white gold ring in ballerina style set with three transparent, intensely colored emeralds in an octagonal step cut, totaling approx. 1 ct, framed by brilliant-cut diamonds and trapezoid cut diamonds, totaling approx. 1.2 ct F-G/VVS . The ring is in very good condition, the emeralds show minimal signs of wear.
Elusive and distinctive, ballerina rings are cluster rings designed to look like the ballet skirt (tutu) worn by ballerinas. Characteristic of their era, ballerina rings are decadent and elegant – and indeed a statement piece. The ballerina ring itself was invented in the 1950s and soared to popularity in the decades that followed, featuring in many collections of 1950s rings. The stones have to work together in perfect harmony in order to create the illusion. Therefore, the beautiful ballerina rings we see today are products of high-jewelry design and mastery of skill. The sense of motion created by this design is reminiscent of the elegant twirl of a ballerina, adding some grace to the ring that balances out the boldness of the ring itself.
In the 1980s, it stayed popular as a form of cocktail ring, when extravagant jewelry was in vogue.
