About the Item
An antique gold, black enamel and pearl ring, comprising three seed pearls and black enamel, with a hinged locket compartment containing plaited hairwork, set in 18 karat yellow gold, to an 18 karat yellow gold band.
This beautiful piece of mourning jewellery is truly one of a kind. Set to the centre is a pale, lustrous seed pearl, in a square field of black enamel. The central panel opens on a hinge, revealing plaited blonde hairwork, beneath a glass panel. The broad shoulders of the ring are, too, adorned with black enamel and set with a seed pearl. The bold, geometric styling is unusual for the era, making this ring all the more striking. The back of the band reads “In Memoriam” and is adorned with black enamel. The inside of the band is engraved with “H.J.Y 11/1/93. Age 2yrs 5mths”. At some point during the life of this ring, it had been resized, poorly, separating the wording on the band and losing some of the detail and some of the enamel. I have had the poor resizing rectified, returning the ring to the best possible condition. Wear and tear acquiescent with age.
The setting of the ring measures 9mm long and 20mm wide (shoulder to shoulder), the band is just over 2mm wide at the back.
