About the Item
Stunning sterling silver cocktail ring with three baguette-cut amethysts.
Antonio Pineda (b. 1919) designed this Mid Century modern sterling silver amethyst ring. Polished and beveled earthy amethyst gems are channel set across the top of the .9 inch wide face. The ring is of dense heavy solid silver construction. The inside is signed with the "Antonio Taxco" crown hallmark.
Pineda is one of the finest designers and craftsman to have emerged from the Mexican Silver Renaissance of the twentieth century. At the age of fourteen he began an apprenticeship under William Spratling and then later worked under Valentin Vidaurreta. Around 1950 his design concept truly coalesced into his signature style of large and spare cleanly designed sets of hollow construction using stones in innovative settings. His pieces became very architectural using inventive joining, catches and closures.
This particular ring is a wonderful example of his style. Each amethyst measures approx. 13mm x 6mm. The stones are of varying purple saturation and translucency with natural crystalline inclusions. The beveled edges have surface wear and small dings, as photographed.
The ring is an approx. size 7 (hard to measure exactly) and may be a pinky ring for some. The thick silver band has some casting marks, patina and other expected surface wear.
