About the Item
An Art Deco sapphire, diamond, platinum, and yellow gold ring, comprising one oval cut blue sapphire, and eleven old mine cut and Peruzzi cut diamonds, set in platinum, to a band of 18 karat yellow gold.
This ring is in the statement ‘odeonesque’ style, that was popular in the late Art Deco period (late 1930s to 1940s), jewellery in this style was chunky, impactful and geometric. Ring designs in this period had often taken inspiration from WW2, in particular tanks and their tracks, which is where the term “tank” ring comes from, and these rings are characterised by straight rows of gemstones. This ring is set with a large, oval cushion cut blue sapphire, set to one side, and held within substantial platinum claws. The sapphire is a beautiful deep, yet vibrant blue, set off perfectly by the cool tone of the platinum. Two rows of diamonds extend in an arc from the sapphire, curving up and around, to create the most gloriously chunky design. The diamonds are a mixture old mine cut diamonds, and old Peruzzi cut diamonds, differing in shape and size, and adding to the glamour and sparkle of this ring. The diamonds are bright, white, sparkly, and well-matched with one another. The stones are raised on an openwork gallery, which is adorned with simple scrollwork, adding a light touch to this substantial piece. The broad shoulders taper to a substantial band of plain, polished yellow gold. The ring is in great condition, with some wear to the sapphire, in line with age and wear. Wear and tear acquiescent with age.
The setting of the ring measures 13mm high, and 15mm wide. The band measures 2mm wide at the back.
