When the owner of a neighboring jewelry store retired in the 1990s, he gave us a pile of old metal samples, most from the 1960s and 1970s. The 1970's were a transitional period for fine jewelry and a lot of these samples are pretty ugly, with styles that will (hopefully) never "come back." But we loooove the freeform Brutalist rings and pendants; these were ubiquitous for a relatively short period; since they were so heavy on the gold, a lot of them ended up at ye olde pawn shoppe (where they were quickly melted) as soon gold prices spiked in the 1980s. Our samples include skads of big, creepy, crawly, branchy, brawny Brutalist rings, including this fantastic "nest" ring for a big pearl. Since we happen to also love big pearls, we decided to modify one of these old soldiers to suit our dark green Tahitian beauty. Eytan made a rubber mold from the metal sample, and from the mold, he got a wax model of the new ring. Then he went to town on the wax; melting, adding, removing, carving, and cutting. The original ring was clearly supposed to look like a mess of branches, but Eytan wanted an eerier look -- part tree, part Medusa -- so his branches have more curve and less crunch. Our pearl could be in a nest, but our pearl could also be a head with some CRAZY hair! So with plenty of acknowledged assistance from the 1970s Brutalist jewelry heyday, we present this bold, high-elevation, high drama, utterly SAVAGE pearl ring in solid 14 karat yellow gold. The pearl is from Seven Seas Pearls, with offices in Los Angeles and Japan. George Hajjar, the owner of Seven Seas, deals only with Tahitian, South Sea and Akoya pearls, and he deals directly with pearl farms -- not through auctions or brokers -- so we always know we're getting the real thing. This pearl is a gorgeous dark green. It looks near-round but it's actually a drop-shaped baroque with its elongated base obscured by the ring. Measuring 15.3mm in diameter, it's an impressive, glossy pearl with just a few natural surface flaws, plus some subtle circles. BORING DETAILS: Ring Face: just under 1" square (23.9mm wide x 24.2mm tall) Pearl: 15.3mm x 18.5mm (1.56 momme) Band Width Thickness (in center back): 2.5mm 1.0mm Ring Weight: 17.5 grams Ring Size: 7.5 - can be resized and we will resize at no charge for full-price buyers.
