This is a magnificent signed BURLE MARX Black Tourmaline Sterling Silver Modernist Ring by the esteemed and highly collectible artist jeweler and dating to the Mid-Century Modern period in its original black box. The magnificent jewel features a stunning open work circular design set with three black tourmaline cabochons. The ring is sterling silver. The box is the original box signed "Designed and Handcrafted by H. Burle Marx Exclusively for The Altomar Collection at Watergate Washington DC". The ring is Mid-Century Modern Jewelry design at its most vivid and desirable. The works of Burle Marx are considered fine Mid-Century Modern Art. This wonderful ring in its original box is a treasure and is one of the most dramatic pieces of Burle Marx jewelry that we have seen. The top of the ring is 1 inch (26mm) in diameter. The ring sits 14mm above the finger. The ring is currently a size 6.5 US (M 1/2 UK) and can be easily resized if desired. The ring is hallmarked Burle Marx 925. The ring weighs 9.2 grams. Provenance: Prominent New York estate. Brazilian jeweler Haroldo Burle-Marx creates hand-crafted and artistic pieces adorned with native Brazilian precious stones including opal, garnet, tourmaline, amethyst, and aquamarine. His designs are historically and mythically inspired but rendered with a modern sensibility and techniques. His work is held in such esteem that since 1955, Burle-Marx has been commissioned by members of the Brazilian government to make pieces of jewelry for visiting dignitaries and their first ladies. Marx made a name for himself amongst prominent European collectors and socialites. His work as an artist-jeweler is distinct and memorable. He was chosen by the Brazilian government to create gifts for visiting heads of state and their wives including Empress Nagako of Japan, Empress Farah Diba of Iran, Queen Margarethe of Denmark and Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. He was also a favored jeweler to Natalie Wood and Merle Oberon. On of his most important commissions was a gem-encrusted cross made for Pope John Paul II.
