About the Item

This important Elmer Seidler ring is among the finest examples of his work that I have seen. It quite nearly defies description in words, yet images hardly do it justice. In truth, you need a microscope to fully appreciate the genius-level craftsmanship and the microscopic individuality and creativity of the design. It is Art Deco inasmuch as it was created in the Art Deco era. The Art Deco aesthetic was sleek aerodynamic lines, bold geometric forms, an embrace of a future made possible through machines, glorious machines,. This ring does not reflect that aesthetic at all. If it had to be categorized it would be more byzantine. But we can't categorize it because the ring disallows it. In the early 1920s, Elmer Seidler learned the craft of goldsmithing from the renowned Bavarian jeweler, Karl Rothmüller, to whom he served as an apprentice. Rothmüller was enormously successful, creating important and magnificent Art Nouveau jewels. By the early 1930s, Elmer Seidler was a master jeweler himself and he opened his own shop. Art Deco was the design aesthetic of the day but Seidler did not follow design trends. His jewelry reflected nothing of the Art Deco movement. Instead of looking forward to an aerodynamic, streamlined future, Seidler's work seemed to look back. Way back: ancient Greece, ancient Rome. This high-karat (at least 18K) gold and platinum ring is a symphony of goldsmithing artistry. It is wildly imaginative and exuberant: A smattering of tiny diamonds, one blue sapphire and one red ruby are individually collet-set set amidst the swirling, beaded, curling jamboree of a mounting. However, there is nothing haphazard in the design of this ring; if there is a tiny swirl on this side, there is going to be one on that side as well. The elaborate detailing is all the more spectacular when you realize it's so perfectly balanced. A halo of teeny tiny little diamonds —fully faceted— reside in a halo around the milgrain-edged bezel that holds the vivid green approximately 20mm x 14mm green grossular garnet cabochon which could easily be mistaken for jade. Each shoulder carries one square and one emerald-cut diamond as well, and there is a third emerald-cut diamond framed right on the back of the shank with four tiny collet-set diamonds at each corner of the elaborate frame. The underside of the ring reveals a gallery set with one tiny blue sapphire and one tiny ruby. The interior of the gold ring is lined with platinum, sleek and bright. This masterpiece is in impeccable condition: I could find no evidence of any damage or repairs. Quite remarkable considering its age (circa 1940). This ring would be the grail piece of any Elmer Seidler collection. But anyone who simply loves *rings* has to appreciate this stunning and original work. Hallmarked on the exterior platinum strip at the rear. This ring is a size 8 ¼ and cannot be resized.
