John Prip was a prominent American metalsmith, educator, and industrial designer known for his innovative contributions to silver design. Born into a family of Danish silversmiths in New York, he moved to Denmark at age ten, where he apprenticed with a master silversmith and studied at the Copenhagen Technical School. Prip returned to the U.S. in 1948, where he began teaching at the School for American Craftsmen in New York. In 1953, he co-founded Shop One, a groundbreaking store showcasing artisans’s work.
Prip’s career flourished when he joined Reed
Barton as a designer-craftsman in residence, where he created pioneering silver and flatware designs. His work merged Danish craftsmanship with innovative design, balancing tradition and modernity. A founding member of the Society of North American Goldsmiths, his creations have been featured in major exhibitions. In 1986, Prip was recognized with a National Endowment for the Arts grant and is celebrated for his lasting impact on American metalsmithing.
