About the Item
This is a genuinely impressive and rather spectacular ring. It features a large, cushion-cut reddish-orange precious topaz that has been certified natural, untreated and with a Brazilian origin. Brazil is the most desirable location for fine topaz.
The interesting thing about topaz is that it's extremely common; almost all of it is colorless and then treated with heat or irradiation to alter the color. But there's another variety of topaz -imperial or precious topaz- that which derives its color naturally and is an exceedingly rare gemstone. This naturally occurring topaz can be coppery-orange color like this one or a vivid pink like the other one I have in my collection.
Imperial topaz is rarely found in stones larger than 5 carts. The topaz you see here is approximately 7.5 carats.
At some point in its long history, the basket into which the precious topaz is set was replaced, though care was clearly taken to match the design of the original. At least I believe this is the case but I could be entirely wrong. The slight color difference between the shank and the basket holding the gem may have been intentional. The effect is gorgeous. I've chosen to photograph this ring in soft, diffused light: exactly the opposite kind of lighting such a stone would normally be photographed in. I wanted you to see that it is so utterly spectacular, richly saturated and -well, imperial- that it will look glorious even in the lowest light. The video was taken in bright direct light, so of course it looks dazzling.
The face of the gemstone has minor surface abrasions as is to be expected from a ring of this age —I believe it dates from the late 1800s to the early 1900s. You could easily have this stone recut if these imperfections bother you. But I have come to love the visible signs that a gemstone displays as it travels through time. Who owned this thing first? Who has worn it throughout its history? Both diamonds and rubies are more common than imperial or precious topaz, so the one thing we do know with certainty about every individual who has ever owned this ring is that *rare* matters to them.
The ring tests as at least 15K gold. It has no marks on the band I can't say for sure where it was made.
It is currently a size 8 ½ and could be resized by your local jeweler. It ships with a certificate from Stone Group Lab stating the topaz is untreated and from Brazil.
