About the Item
Burmese rubies are arguably the gold standard by which every ruby is measured. Known for rarity and saturation of color, rubies of the Burmese origin are prized for their intense red palette caused by a high chromium content in the ground from which they are extracted. Today, the mines of Myanmar (formerly Burma) are no longer producing large or gem-quality stones, according to world-renowned field gemologist Vincent Pardieu [New York Times; November 22, 2021]. The government in Myanmar suspended mining licenses in 2016, thus raising the value on a limited supply of gemstones. Today, the majority of Burmese rubies found on the market were extracted decades - even centuries ago - according to Pardieu.
Due to the difficulty of procurement, Burmese rubies are prized when discovered in estate pieces and often repurposed into contemporary adornments. This ring is a fine example of this phenomenon, with its velvet-red ruby extracted from a vintage piece and re-imagined into a classic design by Spectra Fine Jewelry. The Burmese Ruby Diamond Halo Platinum Engagement Ring features a certified natural corundum ruby accompanied with Gubelin report no. 1002140, dated 23 February 2010, stating the gem is of Burmese origin with indications of thermal heat treatment.
The central oval brilliant-cut ruby is estimated at 7.91 carat weight with a lush, intense quality that is further enhanced by a sparkling perimeter of bright white diamonds; weighing approximately 9 carats total, of F-G color, and VS clarity. The artistry of this piece is rooted in richness, contrast, and exquisite details. Marquise and pear-shaped cuts are subtly set in multiple elevations to conjure a variation of texture, volume, and dazzle. To push the distinction further, the fiery main gem is set with four 18K yellow gold talon-like prongs against a cool gleaming platinum form, which gives this piece an unmistakable custom look that cannot be achieved in mass-manufactured jewelry.
