About the Item
This rare and magnificent Stuart crystal ring is an exceptional surviving example of 17th–century memorial and political jewelry, crafted in sterling silver and 18k gold and set with a remarkably preserved hand-cut rock crystal. Stuart crystals were created during and after the reign of Charles I and the English Civil War as tokens of loyalty, mourning, political allegiance, and deeply personal remembrance. Beneath the hand-faceted crystal is the characteristic internal embroidery—fine gold and colored threads arranged in a cipher or symbolic motif—meticulously worked on silk or vellum more than three centuries ago. This delicate internal composition is astonishingly intact, its gold thread retaining both form and definition, a rarity in pieces of this age.
The crystal itself is beautifully cut, measuring approximately 21 mm by 18 mm, with a continuous perimeter of early hand-cut facets that catch the light softly and authentically in the way only true Stuart crystals do. The stone sits close to the finger and rises just over 5 mm from the surface, giving the ring an understated, elegant profile that makes it easy to wear today. The setting is sterling silver with an 18k gold split shank, the shank being a later but well-executed replacement that allows this extraordinary jewel to be worn securely, comfortably, and without compromising the historical integrity of the piece. The current ring size is 8.5, which is unusually large for Stuart jewelry and makes this ring a compelling unisex choice; its scale, proportions, and presence allow it to be worn confidently by anyone.
Stuart crystal rings of this size, clarity, and condition are exceptionally scarce. Many surviving examples are either severely degraded, heavily restored, or confined to museum collections. To find one with such a large and beautifully preserved crystal, intact embroidery, original silver mounting, and a sympathetic 18k gold shank is extraordinary. The ring was acquired from one of America’s most highly respected dealers of antiquities, further underscoring its authenticity and importance. It is a jewel of profound historical resonance and aesthetic beauty, offering the collector not only a significant Stuart artifact but also a piece that can be meaningfully worn in the modern world.

Victorian Gold in Quartz Statement Ring
Located in Narberth, PA
Gold-in-quartz was formed while the earth was still in its molten state. During the cooling and solidification process, veins of gold became trapped with the crystals of quartz in the mine. This created a very dramatic contrast between the white quartz and the yellow of the gold. Jewelry made from gold quartz became quite a fashion statement of the 1880's. During the Gold Rush era in the American West, most of the gold quartz was mined in California around the San Francisco area.
