About the Item
Platinum and 18K Yellow Gold Tanzanite and Diamond ring. This ring features a cushion cut Tanzanite stone weighing 6.35 carats and 32 princess cut diamonds weighing 2.06 carats. F-G in color VVS in clarity. Ring is size 10.
Though commonly thought to have been first discovered in the 17th century, Tanzanite was only discovered in the form you see it in today in the late 1960s by a Masai Tribesman in Tanzania, the nation from which the stone derives its name. It is understandable that those who stumbled upon Tanzanite in the days immediately following its discovery would think it to be sapphire. The stone’s inky purplish/blue color can closely resemble blue sapphire in many lights, and the fact that gem quality sapphires are also mined in Tanzania further adds to the misidentification. In fact, Tanzanite is a gemstone variety of zoisite, and as was the case with Morganite, Tiffany
Co. was the first large jeweler to recognize the commercial potential of the stone and give it a referential name. Following a high-cost, high visibility publicity campaign in 1968 that only a jeweler as large as Tiffany
Co. could accomplish, Tanzanite began appearing in jewelry from every corner of the world.
