About the Item
An Egyptian Revival Carnelian Scarab ring, set in 18kt gold is orange brown in color and was created in c. 1880. I love the fact that the ring rotates and shows a potter creating an urn on the reverse. This fuels my imagination and makes the time element realistic history for me. Very fine wire work surrounds the carnelian. Scarabs had great significance to the Ancient Egyptian culture. It was believed to roll the sun around the earth as the beetle itself would roll balls of dung in the earth. The ancient Egyptian god Khepri had a beetle face. The scarab beetle was worn close to the body as an amulet and originally was used as a seal. It was a symbol of rebirth and regeneration. This ring is in excellent condition. It is all gender and all age appropriate. Size 6 1/2 Weight 3.3 grams
