Antique Renaissance Revival Cameo Ring: Explore the exquisite craftsmanship of this antique Renaissance revival ring (circa 1850), featuring a cameo of a gryllos, a multi-headed animal and human composite set in a substantial 18k gold mounting adorned with hand painted black and white enamel.
At the heart of this exquisite ring lies a hardstone cameo featuring a head adorned with four faces – a mesmerizing fusion of human and animal symbolism. Central to the composition is the likeness of a ram, a Satyr, a youth, and an older, bearded man. Some scholars suggest that the ram and the satyr embody the primal instincts that reside within us all, while the young man and the old man represent the stages of human life – from birth to death. Others view the composition through the lens of Greek mythology, seeing in the satyr a symbol of Dionysian revelry and in the ram a representation of fertility and abundance.
Beyond its symbolic significance, this gryllos cameo ring is a testament to the skill and artistry of its creator. Carved from a single piece of hard stone, the intricate details of the cameo speak to the painstaking craftsmanship of the artisan who made it. Every curve and contour is rendered with precision, capturing the essence of the figures immortalized within.
The piece measures 0.45 inches wide and weighs 12.78 grams. It is a size 10.25 and can only be minimally re-sized without damage to the enamel. It is in good condition; however, the tip of the Satyr's horn appears to be chipped and there is some wear to the enamel on the shoulders of the band.
