About the Item
A breathtaking survivor from the late Georgian era, this exceptionally large 1.25-carat rose-cut diamond glows with the unmistakable romance of the 18th century. Set beneath its original hand-laid foil and cradled in a meticulously crafted silver-topped gold collet, the diamond radiates a soft, candlelit brilliance that modern stones simply cannot replicate.
This is not a later Victorian reconstruction—this is an entirely authentic late-18th/early-19th century ring, preserved with extraordinary integrity. The gently domed rose cut displays the irregular, hand-faced geometry that connoisseurs prize, and retains the full drama and depth that made Georgian diamonds so coveted in their day.
Flanking the center stone are two original deep red garnets—likely early pyrope, the garnet of choice for Georgian goldsmiths—set into sculptural shoulders with exquisitely chased detailing. The warm gold shank, likely 18–22 karat, is fully hand-formed and exhibits the delicate texturing and softly asymmetric charm that only true Georgian work possesses.
Why This Ring Is Exceptionally Rare
Large Georgian diamonds over 1ct are exceedingly scarce—most examples from this era fall between 0.25–0.80ct. At approximately 1.25 ct, this stone would have been considered substantial even for the Georgian elite.
The original foil remains intact and beautifully luminous.
The ring has not been altered into a later Victorian or Edwardian mounting; it stands as a near-unicorn example of untouched late-18th-century jewelcraft.
The combination of a significant diamond, colored side stones, and original silver-topped gold settings is highly desirable to collectors and institutions alike.
From roughly 1790–1810, wealthy households favored rose-cut diamonds set against hand-colored foil to amplify their glow in candlelit rooms. Jewelers of the period used silver over gold to heighten the brilliance of the stones—an unmistakable hallmark of genuine Georgian-era construction. The sculptural shank and pronged collet seen here are directly consistent with high-quality English and Continental jewelers from the turn of the 19th century.
With respect to wearability, though over 200 years old, the ring is perfectly suited for modern wear. The low, rounded profile of the rose cut makes it exceptionally comfortable, and the colored garnets offer a subtle warmth that complements any skin tone.
